Why does listing cost a dollar?

Because a dollar is a better spam filter than any heuristic, and because judging your site costs us something whichever way it comes out. It buys a permanent place on the board and a verdict on every question the board can be sorted by — including ones bought years from now. It does not buy a rank, and it is not refunded if the answer is no; the form says so beside a box you have to tick.

Why is my site ranked below someone who paid?

Because they paid. That is the entire mechanic, and it is why their own probability is printed beside them at #1 where nobody can miss it. The board is honest about being bought.

Can I pay to change my own score?

No. You can pay to change the question, which changes what the score is measuring, and you can improve the one line of self-description Jev reads. You cannot buy the number.

What happens to my board when someone else buys one?

Nothing. It keeps its address, its ordering, its timestamp and your name. The only thing you lose is the front page.

Why does the price keep moving?

Each sale raises the next ask and every hour without one lowers it, back toward a floor set by the number of sites on the board. Reordering a bigger board costs more because it is literally more work.

What is Jev?

A model from typesafe.ai that answers typed questions — here, yes/no ones — with a calibrated probability instead of prose. It cannot ramble, hedge or refuse to commit to a figure, which is what makes a whole board of them comparable.

Why “Jevons”?

William Stanley Jevons, The Coal Question, 1865: making coal-fired engines more efficient increased Britain’s coal consumption instead of reducing it, because cheap coal-power became worth using for things nobody would have wasted it on before. Judgement is the coal. Re-ranking the whole board on a stranger’s whim costs a few cents, which is exactly why it happens all day.

Get my listing off the board?

Yes — ask and it comes off the live board. Sealed boards that already contain it stay as they are; they are a record of a date, and editing them would make the archive worth nothing.
